  • Hailing from Mobile, Alabama, The Red Clay Strays weave classic country, Southern rock, and gospel threads into their own brand of high-octane rock and roll. The quintet are known for their energetic live performances and authentic sound.
  • After a five-year ordeal with a major label that tried to polish their raw sound and constrain their creativity, The Red Clay Strays decided to take matters into their own hands. With the support of their loyal fans who contributed to a crowdfunding campaign, the band secured a private studio where they could bring their musical vision to fruition. In a marathon session of eight days, they recorded 12 songs, working tirelessly and sleeping on the studio floor. The outcome was their debut album, Moment of Truth, which hit the shelves on April 29, 2022.
  • Penned by frontman Brandon Coleman and guitarist Drew Nix with frequent Kip Moore collaborator Dan Couch, "Wondering Why" is the album's breakout song. It debuted at #93 on the Hot 100 dated December 30, 2023.
  • Coleman sings of his romantic partner's love for him despite their different backgrounds. She had a silver spoon and never misses Sunday church. His family is "blue-collar, low-dollar, out here where concrete meets old red dirt." Coleman can't help wondering why she wants to be with him, but every night he thanks his maker that she does.
  • In 2019, The Red Clay Strays were pounding the pavement of the Southeastern United States, their boots worn and spirits high. Small clubs and dusty festival stages were their battlegrounds, each performance a brick laid in the foundation of their musical dreams. "We were a bar band at the time," Drew Nix told Billboard. "Playing honky-tonks [with] no stability, really just chasing the dream."

But the relentless pursuit of musical glory came at a cost. Nix candidly acknowledges the toll it took on their personal lives, particularly on the women who held their hearts. "We were like, 'Our women have the short end of the stick of this.' I wonder why they even like us.'"

It was this very question that sparked the creation of "Wondering Why," which depicts an unlikely love story between an upper-class woman and a working-class man.
  • A classic tale of a guy who feels he is punching above his weight romantically speaking, "Wondering Why" was rooted in a communal truth. "When we wrote it in 2019 with Dan Couch we were still paying clubs for $125 a night, and we couldn't provide," Coleman told Mojo magazine. "Our women were getting the short end of the stick, but they kept on loving us deadbeat musicians. Even when we made Moment of Truth in 2021, we were struggling with a lack of shows after COVID. Our bus blew up, we'd spent $13,000 on the album and we were $25,000 in the hole. Then we started a crowdfunded campaign, and we raised $54,000 in the first week. It was like, 'OK. We can do this.'"
