Songfacts®:

  • This song is a summery tune about how it always feels like rain when the person you love is gone. Describing the track, Script guitarist Mark Sheehan told The Independent:

"The track itself feels summery, it feels like you could dance to it and feels upbeat but the lyrical content is when we use the metaphor of the weather to say when the person leaves your life 'they make it rain'. Using those two things combined it was a cool idea for us to make it 'Rain' in summer."
  • Musically this more upbeat than The Script's previous singles. The band told The Metro:

"With Rain we just decided we needed something a bit lighter, you can't just walk into a party of people and start with a heavy topic. It's nice to have a bit of escapism that people can bob their head to and not be so serious about but when people peel the layers of the song they realize that lyrically we've gone deep but on the surface we wanted people to have a bit of fun."
  • During the video, The Script play to a dancing crowd in the club as the lighting shifts between bright and dim setting. "We've never had the word 'Dancing' next to the word The Script before – it would be dad dancing!" the band joked. "So we've always been the kind of sing along band, the pub band that everybody had that had those anthems but never really something that got everyone on their feet and moved."
  • Co-writer Camille Purcell's lyrics are based around what she calls "sexual sadness." She explained to the BBC that the song is based around the idea that "you're standing in a club and you want to have sex but you're heartbroken: sexual sadness."
