Songfacts®:

  • This is an autobiographical song; in 1957, Alex Harvey won a competition by the Daily Record newspaper to find Scotland's answer to Tommy Steele. At that time, Steele was riding high in the charts, though he would later move into acting. Harvey is said to have come up with this phrase himself, though it is difficult to tell how seriously he meant it to be taken because as well as being a mesmeric performer he had a raucous sense of humor.
  • "Last Of The Teenage Idols" or "The Last Of The Teenage Idols" runs to 7 minutes 15 seconds and was co-written by Harvey, keyboard player Hugh McKenna and lead guitarist Zal Cleminson. It is the seventh and final track on the band's 1973 Next album. >>
