Songfacts®:

  • This was originally released 1987 on the FM Revolver label. It was their first song to feature The Stone Roses classic jangling sound. In 1988 the Stone Roses signed up with Silvertone, and when they started to become popular, their former label decided to cash in and re-released the single. They also made a video for the song, which The Stone Roses hated. The band tried to stop them but they went ahead anyway. One day on route to the recording studio they stopped by the FM Revolver headquarters and trashed the offices with paint, and threw a rock through the window of their former manager Paul Birch's car. The band were arrested and fined 3,600 pounds each.
  • The song itself is an ode to a girl called Sally. Oasis' Noel Gallagher, who like The Stone Roses comes from Manchester, on hearing this was inspired to write a song of the same quality. However, despite rumors to the contrary, "Sally Cinnamon" is not the same Sally who Noel Gallagher later sung about in the Oasis song "Don't Look Back In Anger." >>>

  • In an interesting twist, the protagonist finds a love letter to Sally from a girl in Sally's jacket pocket, which could mean:
    1) Sally has a female admirer but isn't reciprocating.
    2) Sally is having a relationship with the girl.

If it is 2, then this love song is one of very few where the protagonist is sad because his girl is in love with a girl. >>>
