Along with many other songs of the late '60s, this one was inspired by the huge interest in horoscopes and Zodiac signs. At the time, many folks would find out the sign of a potential mate to check compatibility; in this song, the girls don't care about his sign - they can tell he's a good man.
The Supremes were months away from losing Diana Ross when they recorded this song. They had already lost their main songwriters, the Motown team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland. This song was written by the head of the label, Berry Gordy, and one of his favorite collaborators, Henry Cosby.
For their 1990 album Poison, the hip-hop group Bell Biv DeVoe sampled the intro of this on their song "Ain't Nut'in' Changed."
The working titles for this song were "Don't Destroy Me" and "The Paper Said Rain." >>>

Sam Williams from Sherman OaksThis is a great song that talks about how Zodiac signs are meaningless and it’s all about how someone feels about someone else regardless of their sign. So many people tend to get hung up on someone’s sign but in reality, they might be a Libra or a Cancer but they might not be EXACTLY like how a Cancer or a Libra is supposed to be like.Too many people like to put people in a box based off of their sign even though they might not be ANYTHING like their sign at all. It just doesn’t work that way in real life and this song does a good job of letting people know that.

However, the dismal chart performance of this record (#31 pop) along with the even poorer performance of the flip side "The Young Folks" (#69 pop) caused Berry Gordy to change his plans.
