Songfacts®:

  • "How Do I Make You Love Me?" finds The Weeknd attempting to persuade his love interest to fall for him and have a committed relationship. Abel Tesfate has built a reputation for a hedonistic party lifestyle, so craving approval is something out of character. Such is his desire for the woman, he humbly begs for her love in a way he's rarely done before.
  • The Weeknd co-wrote the electro-dance track with Axwell, Steve Angello, and Sebastian Ingrosso of The Swedish House Mafia. It marks his third collaboration with the Scandinavian trio following their single "Moth To A Flame" and another Dawn FM track, "Sacrifice."
  • Dawn FM executive producers Max Martin and Oneohtrix Point Never also contributed to the writing of the song along with Oscar Holter and Matt Cohn.
  • The trippy animated video picks up in the hospital where the "Out Of Time" visual left off. After Jim Carrey gives The Weeknd a new face, the singer finds himself in a colorful, animated world. The Weeknd's cartoon version stumbles out of bed and embarks on a bloody journey through a city to find his love interest.

The video's director Jocelyn Charles worked with a team of 15 animators. The Weeknd contributed to its story alongside Charles and Los Angeles directoral duo Cliqua.
