Songfacts®:

  • With just two members, The White Stripes kept it simple in their early years, with stripped-down, blues-inflected songs typically written by Jack White. "Apple Blossom," from their second album, De Stijl, fits this description.

The song has no chorus, which lets Jack advance the story: a girl he likes has been hurt by a man who doesn't deserve her, and he tries to comfort her. As the song builds, so do his ambitions, and by the last lines, he's all in:

I'll fall in love with you
    I think I'll marry you

It's not clear what the "Apple Blossom" thinks of this guy, but there's a good chance she finds him more than a little creepy.
  • This was the first song The White Stripes performed on television. They played it when they appeared on the Detroit Public Television series Backstage Pass in 2000.
  • Jack White has a lot of affection for this song, and often played it live with both The White Stripes and as a solo act.
