Songfacts®:

  • Despite its grim title, this is a liberating song about living life to the fullest, enjoying the highs, and understanding and appreciating the lows. "The song is about the impermanence of life, and with that in mind, the beauty of each passing second," frontman Matthew "Murph" Murphy explained. "Key line for me is 'Icarus was my best friend, so I'm gonna make him proud in the end,' which I guess is a playful take on living life to its fullest even though the consequences of that might be dire."

Murph added that this is not a call to living a nihilistic lifestyle, but perhaps an entreaty "to being present and the joy that can be found in appreciating each moment we find ourselves in."
  • Murph originally wrote the song in his LA studio during lockdown based on a lyric he'd had floating around in his notes for ages. "The chorus was just the same three chords all the time and then, by accident, when I was recording some stuff for the demo," he told Apple Music. "I played the wrong chord and it completely opened everything up."
  • Murph wrote "Everything I Love Is Going To Die" with Micah Premnath (Selena Gomez's "Back to You," Lecrae featuring John Legend's "Drown") and Luke Niccoli (Gwen Stefani's "Let Me Reintroduce Myself" and "Slow Clap"). Longtime Bastille collaborator Mark Crew produced the track.
