Songfacts®:

  • This worship classic was inspired by a tragedy that happened to a local family whom Third Day frontman Mac Powell knew. In our 2012 interview with Powell, he said: "I forget what year, but it was around Christmastime. There was a family that lived close to us that I knew of. I knew the family, we had met, but they weren't close friends. There was a tragic accident in their family and they lost their son, who was I think 2 or 3 years old at the time. And just as a father hearing that story, especially around Christmastime, where the focus a lot of times is on family and you're seeing family and people coming in from out of town, I was just thinking through that as a father and thinking what it would be like to have that kind of loss. It made me go down that road of thinking not only about that, but about other things that people go through and struggles and trials that people face. So that really brought about the initial idea of 'Cry Out to Jesus.'"
