Songfacts®:

  • Toad the Wet Sprocket went 16 years without releasing a new album. When they got together to create New Constellation, the four band members were in their 40s and far removed from their concerns from their '90s heyday. The result was an album that dealt more with gratitude and relationships - three of the members were married and none had been divorced.

In our interview with lead singer Glen Phillips, he said of this song: "People think of marriage and relationships as this destination, and it's definitely a process. 'Golden Age' is about this tendency to look back and idealize this task that never actually happened, or idealize a future that will never happen and lose the present."
