Songfacts®:

  • This was the theme song to the UK soap opera Crossroads, which was first screened on November 2, 1964. "Crossroads" was the name of a fictional motel near Birmingham that was owned by Meg Richardson, played by actress and occasional singer Noele Gordon, who was the first woman ever to appear on colour television, being hired by John Logie Baird himself.

Every TV series needs a theme song or theme music, and that honour fell to Tony Hatch, who but for Elton John might just have been the most famous son of Pinner. According to the man himself, he had previously written one piece of music for ATV, in Australia, and on the strength of this was contacted by the man who came up with the series, Reg Watson, an Australian TV producer who was working for ATV in Birmingham. Hatch, who entered the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013, is best known for composing Petula Clark's hits.
  • The original music was written in counterpoint; a recording of this was made but was not used in the show. The music was also rearranged, and was even recorded by a certain Mr. McCartney with his then group Wings. It appeared on their 1975 album Venus And Mars.
  • The theme music was released as a single in 1965, and in 1972, Peter Ling added lyrics, and the song was performed by Carl Wayne of The Move. Wayne had actually had a bit part in the Crossroads TV series.

There are no less than four versions of the song. >>>
