Songfacts®:

  • "God Save The Queen" was first used as the National Anthem of Great Britain when Queen Victoria ascended to the throne in 1837; previously it had been "God Save The King."

    The anthem begins:

    God Save our Gracious Queen
    Long Live our Noble Queen

Although it has the same melody as "God Save The King" with only the relevant minor alterations for gender, a fourth verse was added relating to parochial events, but this was soon abandoned. There were though various re-writes.

In 1892, Sydney G.R. Coles re-wrote it as "God Save Our Empress Queen"; it was also rewritten by Canon F.K. Harford.

Ten years earlier, H.H. Rajah Sir Sourindro Mohun Tagore had translated it into Sanskrit and Bengali; further translations were made into other languages of "the Queen's Empire."
  • The National Anthem has also been subjected to parody - which it could be argued amounts to sedition. It was parodied especially and most notoriously by the Sex Pistols, whose version definitely does amount to sedition! >>>

  • God Save the King/Queen" was the sole official national anthem of New Zealand until 1977 when Robert Muldoon's government added "God Defend New Zealand" as a second one.
  • The National Anthem of Great Britain reverted to "God Save The King" following the death of Elizabeth II on September 8, 2022, and the ascension to the UK throne of her son King Charles III.
