Songfacts®:

  • "The Collier Lass" is one of a number of mining related songs discussed by Roy Palmer in his 1974 book Poverty Knock a picture of industrial life in the 19th century through songs, ballads and contemporary accounts.

Written in 3/4 time, it tells the story of Polly Parker, and is undoubtedly grounded in historical fact. Until 1842, children as young as ten years old were set to work down the mines. In the original version, Polly lives in Worsley, Lancashire. The song probably dates from the 1830s. >>>
