Songfacts®:

  • This song is about a couple who break up, but share a bond that will never be broken. It wasn't meant to be, but on some level they'll always be together.
  • Vocalist Pat Monahan penned this ballad with OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder, whose other writing credits include "Bleeding Love" for Leona Lewis and "Halo for Beyoncé." For the Save Me San Francisco album, Train brought in outside writers for the first time, which paid off with hits like "Hey Soul Sister" and "Marry Me."
  • Lead guitarist Jimmy Stafford recalled to The Huffington Post: "That's one where, in the studio, Ryan had done such a great job making a demo of it. It took a few tries, I think we had three different piano players attempt it before we got it to San Francisco where our old friend Jerry Becker, who tours us with now, finally laid the piano track down that ended up on the record. (Ryan) did such a good job on the demos that it was tough to beat."
