Songfacts®:

  • In 1999 Red Hot Chili Peppers recorded a track titled "Californication" in which they reflected on the hedonism that Hollywood was selling to the rest of the world. Here, Travis Scott's flips that song title in order to refer to the temptations and the pressures of fame he finds in his home city of Houston.

I might need me some ventilation
    A little vacation, Houstonfornication
    Mind redefine new renovations
Space coupe back out of the space station

Scott needs to take a breather from the potentially harmful activities he gets up to in his hometown.
  • The song was produced by FARRI, Sevn Thomas, and Wallis Lane. Thomas explained to DJ Booth that he originally gave the "Houstonfornication" beat to Scott in 2017, adding, "I literally made that in an Airbnb in a living room while my friends were passed out on the floor."
  • Travis Scott alludes to spending time with Bill Clinton in the first verse.

Had some real conversations with my nigga Bill about Congress, yeah (straight up)
We at the fest, come and link, per-request, yeah (alright)

Scott and Bill Clinton are genuine acquaintances. Back in 2016 the Houston rapper posted five photos with the former US president on his Instagram account. One of them which was taken at Made In America Festival, features the caption "me and da homie."
  • The song title came from Sevn Thomas' beat. The producer told Billboard: "It's crazy because this happened in three different instances with me and Travis. I'll name a beat something, it inspires an idea and then it ends up being the song title - which is crazy. I think we have an unspoken synergy because I actually never been in the studio with Travis before so there must be something that aligns us in the universe."
