Songfacts®:

  • Twenty One Pilots frontman Tyler Joseph wrote this song for Scaled and Icy. Recorded during the COVID pandemic, the album catalogues Joseph's prevailing emotions during the Coronavirus era.
  • This song finds Joseph painting a picture of his feelings of isolation and alienation while locked down during COVID quarantine. With every day seeming the same and routine going out of the window, the singer needed his wife Jenna to prompt him to maintain basic hygiene habits.

Catch me floatin' circles in my fishbowl
    Keep things fresh
She said that I should change my clothes
I exaggerate the life we used to know

It was the love of Jenna that kept Joseph going during the pandemic.
  • Slow down on Monday
Not a sound on Wednesday, yeah
    Might get loud on Friday
    But on Saturday, Saturday, Saturday
    We paint the town

During the chorus, Joseph recounts a normal week in pre-pandemic times. This contrasts with the COVID-era when time has gone out of the window. "When you strip away what day of the week it is, you lose your rhythm," Joseph told Apple Music. "You lose your sense of what is up and what is down. You feel like you're swirling and your feet aren't planted. The song is really, 'I'm talking to my wife, hoping that she sticks with me, even though I'm working through this, even though I'm kind of tumbling into nothingness.'"
  • Joseph inserted a telephone conversation he had with Jenna into the song. He was recording while on the phone call, and realized it fit perfectly as the song's bridge.
  • Tyler Joseph wrote the upbeat party-ready track and co-produced it with Greg Kurstin, co-writer of hits for the likes of Kelly Clarkson ("What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger)" and Adele ("Hello"). This is Twenty One Pilots' first collaboration with Kurstin, who adds a poppy sheen to their usual rap-rock sound.
  • The video shows Twenty One Pilots performing atop a submarine and in a room below sea level as passengers dance along to the duo's performance. A terrifying sea monster crashes into the boat, causing it to break and flood. They continue their deep sea gig submerged in water, and the clip ends with the survivors floating amongst the waves.

Twenty One Pilots' longtime visual collaborator Andrew Donoho shot the video over the course of a week in May 2021 across multiple locations, including the interior of an operating submarine and an underwater set.
