Songfacts®:

  • "Eggman" is a track from Ty Segall's 15th album, Three Bells. The song's DNA is unmistakable. Chromatic chord changes squirm and writhe, the tempo shifts like a malfunctioning tape machine, and a playground stomp rhythm underpins the madness before dissolving into a cacophony of freeform noise. It's a sonic assault that recalls the confrontational spirit of his 2016 album Emotional Mugger.
  • Lyrically, "Eggman" gets delightfully weird. The icky vibe evokes the theatrical shock tactics of Segall's Emotional Mugger days, a time when audiences were treated to the sight of the frontman sporting a baby mask onstage. The nonsensical yet strangely fitting title might be inspired by The Beatles' "I Am The Walrus," adding another layer of absurdity to the mix.
  • But there's a collaborative spirit at play this time around. In an interview with Uncut magazine, Segall revealed his wife, Denée, penned the lyrics for "Eggman."

He explained, "I had the idea, and I was like, 'Alright let's do a song about... you know this thing.' And she's like, 'OK'. Because I had the riff already I was like, 'It's got to be this type of a thing, this concept.' And she came back and she's like, 'How about Eggman?' It's like, Yes! perfect.'"
  • This isn't the only instance of marital harmony on Three Bells. Segall and Denée co-wrote five tracks in total, and she even designed the album's artwork. Recorded at his home studio, Harmonizer Studios in Topanga, California, Three Bells sees Segall co-producing with his longtime friend Cooper Crain, guitarist/organist of the psychedelic drone outfit Cave.
