Songfacts®:

  • In his notes for Songs Of Experience, Bono mentions his "brush with mortality," a health scare that rocked him to the core.

"I was on the receiving end of a shock to the system myself, a shock that left me clinging on to my own life like a raft," he writes. "It's an arresting experience. I was arrested."

Bono paints a picture of his near death experience during this track.

    If there is a light
    We can't always see
    And there is a world
    We can't always be

Bassist Adam Clayton explained to The Sun: "There are a lot of songs about light in the U2 repertoire. It's an image of faith and obviously people having near-death experiences describe seeing a bright light. So these are themes that are being spoken about."
