Songfacts®:

  • This song is about fidelity, as Bono sings of how he would not jeopardize love for romance elsewhere. It's not a common theme in Rock lyrics, as in many songs the singer refuses to limit himself to one woman. >>>

  • Bono (from Q Magazine November 2004): "The sound of sitting on a stoop in New York in the summer. I wanted a song that rolled up the Clash and Marvin Gaye into one."
  • Bono explains in the band biography U2 by U2: "'A Man And A Woman' was about rediscovering a kind of flirtatious and romantic love, when you were younger and less sure-footed in the ways that love can take you. It's that dance around the subject, seduction, that beautiful flirtation, which is in the end the most sexual thing, the not knowing, the not going there. Men and women seem to want to trample that mysterious distance that lies between us. I'm intrigued by it, it keeps me interested."
