Songfacts®:

  • This whimsical piece of synth-pop funk finds Ezra Koenig singing about the wonder of the sunflower.

    Sunflower in the morning
    Standing in the garden
    All before you wake
    No power can compel you
    Out into the daylight
    Let that evil wait

A sunflower is often used by songwriters as a symbol of loyalty and longevity because of the flower's ability to retain its beauty in the face of environmental factors that would leave other plants wilted.
  • Other artists that have recorded songs in which they use a sunflower as a metaphor for someone's else's strength and resilience include Heart, Basement Jaxx, Lenny Kravitz and Post Malone.
  • The song features guitar work by Steve Lacy from Los Angeles-based R&B band The Internet. Lacy is the first guest to ever feature on a song released by Vampire Weekend. Koening revealed in an Instagram post that "A-Punk" was the first song that Lacy learned on guitar.
  • The song's music video was directed by actor Jonah Hill. It follows Ezra Koenig and Steve Lacy as they walk around New York City's Upper West Side neighborhood. The locations include the famous Manhattan delis Zabars and Barney Greengrass.

Koenig and Lacy also run into a couple of famous faces. Yo! MTV Raps host Fab 5 Freddy appears soon after the clip begins while later on comedian Jerry Seinfeld can be seen giving a quizzical look to the camera.
  • Vampire Weekend and Steve Lacy performed the collaborative track together live for the first time on September 6, 2019. Lacy joined the band during their hometown show at Madison Square Garden.
