Songfacts®:

  • According to music historian Derek Scott in The Singing Bourgeois: Songs Of The Victorian Drawing Room And Parlour, "Avenging And Bright" is based on the Gaelic air "Cruchan Na Feine" and drawn from a translation of Deidre by O'Flanagan.

The music is in 3/4 time, and the words were written by Thomas Moore (not to be confused with Sir Thomas More). Moore (1779-1852) was born in Dublin, and actually studied law at the Middle Temple, London.
  • There are various transliterations, but Deirdri, Or the Lamentable Fate of the Sons of Usnach is an ancient Irish epic of unknown origin. >>>
