Songfacts®:

  • This nostalgic song has remained very popular among high school students (especially girls) wondering what will become of their friendships upon graduation. The song is very upbeat, with the sentiment that whatever happens the friendships will last.
  • The music in this song is based on Canon In D Major by the German composer Johann Pachelbel, although the key is changed (appropriately) to C. "Canon In D Major" is known for its use in weddings, while "Pomp and Circumstance" is the traditional graduation march.
  • Vitamin C is Colleen Fitzpatrick. She had a modest hit in 1999 with "Smile," a duet with the Jamaican singer Lady Saw. Her follow-up to "Graduation" was "The Itch," which made it to #45 in the US. Her brief period of fame included a personalized Barbie, a lipstick endorsement, and a tour with the boy band 98 Degrees. She has since used her Tween-pop songwriting powers to work on songs for Hannah Montana, Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez.
