Songfacts®:

  • This rocker celebrates hard partying and breaking the rules. When Volbeat frontman Michael Poulsen listened to the song, he decided it needed another voice in the mix. He has long been a fan of Clutch vocalist Neil Fallon's gruff and powerful style, so he emailed him and Fallon agreed to be the other singer.
  • Two members of rock and roll outfit JD McPherson Band also lend their talents to the song. Raynier Jacob Jacildo is the pianist while Doug Corocran contributes a Clarence Clemons-esque saxophone break. Poulsen said: "I wanted it to sound like Jerry Lee Lewis and the saxophone sound you hear in Little Richard's music, they really nailed it."
  • Fallon described the track on social media as "guns out rock and roll."
  • Fallon, Jacildo and Corcoran also pop up in the performance video. The clip was directed by Adam Rothlein at Ghost Atomic Pictures and filmed over the space of four hours at Futura Studio in Roslindale, Massachusetts.
  • "Die To Live" reached the top of Billboard's Mainstream Rock Songs chart, becoming the Danish rockers' eighth #1 on the tally. In doing so, Volbeat became the European act with the most #1s dating to the chart's 1981 inception. They'd previously been in a tie with U2 at seven chart-toppers.

  • Stranger from The OutsideDoes Volbeat's "Die to live" remind anyone else of something Meatloaf would play
  • Douglas H Johnson from Tallahassee Florida UsaI saw where they described this album as "spiritual sarcasm". But I can't figure out if that's what is going on in this song or not.
