Songfacts®:

  • Weezer lead singer Rivers Cuomo wrote "Mykel And Carli" for Mykel and Carli Allan, sisters who founded the Weezer fan club and championed the band in their early years. In 1997, about four years after the song was written, Mykel and Carli, along with their younger sister, Trysta, died in a car crash driving back from a Weezer concert.
  • Weezer recorded this song for their debut album, The Blue Album, but it didn't make the cut, so they used it as the B-side of "Undone - The Sweater Song," their first single. They included the song on the 10th anniversary re-release of the album.
  • This song is also known by its earlier titles, "Please Pick Up the Phone" and "A Letter to Mykel and Carli (from a High School Friend)."
  • The Los Angeles band Black Market Flowers beat Cuomo by just a few weeks with their own "Mykel and Carli" song for the sisters, who were also their friends. It's featured on their 1993 album, Bind, and on the Hear You Me! A Tribute To Mykel And Carli album.
  • The "hear you me" chorus inspired Jimmy Eat World's "Hear You Me," from their 2001 album, Bleed American.
  • After Mykel and Carli Allan died, Weezer took part in a tribute concert to raise money for their family. Their next album, 2001's Green Album, is dedicated to the Allan sisters' memory.
