Songfacts®:

  • To write the songs for Make Believe, lead singer Rivers Cuomo put himself into seclusion and practiced complete celibacy in order to focus all his artistic energy on the lyrics. This song sounds like it was written to commemorate his suffrage for his art: "Just can't get no play" - a tribute to his conscious choice of celibacy during this time. >>

  • The video features actress Elisha Cuthbert as the lead singer of Weeze, a fictional predecessor to Weezer, who is eventually replaced by frontman Rivers Cuomo. >>

  • Lead singer Rivers Cuomo: "I sincerely hope that it's the last song I write about being frustrated and angry with myself for being shy, because I've written way too many of those songs already."
  • Drummer Pat Wilson: "It sounds like it could have been on The Green Album. I think of it as classic Weezer."
  • Weezer made some changes to this song when it was released as a single, adding the "Perfect Situation" background vocals near the end of the song. The band liked this version better than the original, and in the age of digital music, were able to replace the song on downloads of the album as well as new pressings of the CD. >>

  • Charley from Indianapolis, InGreat comments from everyone. I too fell in love with the music first and the lyrics second. I feel as though the guitar solo represents a man crying because he keeps messing up his "perfect situation". I feel like he is already in a relationship with a perfect girl but he keeps screwing it up.....and then repeats these same mistakes in every relationship he has. It could be he is afraid of commitment, afraid of getting hurt, or wanting to break up with her before she breaks up with him ("can you blame her"?). So much depth to these simple lyrics. LOVE this song!
  • Raunchy from Tulsa, OkWow! I still love this song & I think it's about the uncertainties of growing up. I think most guys experience the "situation" in this song. By the way, I noticed in Billboard's archives that this song was #1 on the Modern Rock charts, yet Songfacts shows it as #51. It's best to take the ranking from the musical genre chart it comes from. The Billboard Hot 100 is too vague. Try it. Rock on, Weeeeeeeeezzzeerrrr.
  • Rotunda from Tulsa, OkI've loved this song for years. I think it raises a lot of emotions for guys & girls who are struggling to "fit in" or to find someone special when you don't feel special yourself. When I first heard "Perfect Situation" back in 2005, I know I felt so alone and like I'd never find anyone to love me or to love. After all, who wants to love a 400 pound girl! My name is Rotunda and I am pretty rotund. So I went on a radical crash diet and lost all this tonnage! I looked pretty decent then, but it took me five years to do it. So in the past 4 years I still haven't found anyone special. This song has a special place in my heart. Maybe I will find someone to love and someone who loves me.
  • Randy from Fayettevile, ArI related to this song back in 2005 when I got the album "Make Believe" & heard "Perfect Situation" on radio. I wasn't so hot getting any chicks because I was so self-conscious about my enormous nose. I loved Weezer's songs because they seemed to be a nerdy & geeky band who understood guy's trials thru life. I got a nose reduction operation. It didn't help me get any chicks, but I felt a heck of a lot better about myself. At least I looked normal & not like some elephant on steroids! This song was a sort of crutch for me for a while. But anyway, I love a lot of Weezer's songs. Now, I feel good about myself even if I don't look like Brad Pitt.
  • Dennis from Inverness, FlI think this song should be taken as a "don't give up" type of song especially the line "All I have to do is swing, and I'm a hero". He says that he is a zero after this line, however if you would have just taken that "swing" he would have been a hero. I take this as him saying "don't be a zero, take that swing"
  • Nick from Seattle, AlbaniaThis was my anthem freshman year! such a powerfull song.
  • Davis from Belmont, NcElisha Cuthbert was awesome in the video. I think it is a great song and a great video.
  • Jon from Auburn, WaMake Believe's third single, "Perfect Situation", spent four weeks in a row at the #1 spot on the Billboard Modern Rock chart, a personal record for Weezer. The Perfect Situation video starred Elisha Cuthbert and was directed by Marc Webb.
  • Leah from Humboldt, Iai really like this song and i think that the whole weeze thing in the video is reallly cute.
  • Mineyuh from Arima, OtherI never really knew what the song meant and i loved it, now i know what it means i know why i loved it so much. Mineyuh TT
  • Cadon from San Fransico, CaI love weezer. i relate to this song so much. i have plenty of friends (much which are girls) yet i still cant get any woman to like me.
  • Kenan from Anchorage, Akthis song reminds me of my cousin because he matches it so good
  • Laine from Detroit, MiIt's a really good song... especially for a single person who is tired of hearing every detail of their friends' love lives, yet they still say "oh, you'll be happy one day". Yet I "just can't get no play" from the guys "all around as they search the night..." and so on. You get it.
