Songfacts®:

  • Written by Wham! lead singer George Michael, "The Edge Of Heaven" finds him over the moon for his lover, who takes him right to the edge of heaven. Just 22 when the song was released, it takes a slightly risqué turn with lyrics like:

    I would strap you up
    But don't worry baby
You know I wouldn't hurt you 'less you wanted me to

In his solo career, Michael explored matters of the flesh much more blatantly, notably in his hit "I Want Your Sex."
  • "The Edge Of Heaven" was released to conicide with the group's split; it was the first single from their appropriately named album The Final. It reached #10 in the US but was far bigger in their native UK, where it was their fourth #1 hit. George Michael went on to become an international superstar; Andrew Ridgeley faded from the spotlight.

Wham! never re-formed, but they did land a fifth #1 UK hit in 2021 after "Last Christmas" was re-released.
  • Elton John played the piano on 7-inch version of this song. He also played the piano at Wham!'s farewell concert at Wembley Stadium in front of 73,000 fans, which tied in with this song's release.

  • Mitchell from Liverpool, UkOne statement here needs updating - The Edge of Heaven was their final UK #1 before splitting, and remained their last for almost 35 years.

They eventually had a fifth UK #1 in 2021, when their 1984 hit “Last Christmas” finally reached number one.
  • Randy from IdahoWhy is this track released in mono? It would have such a big sound if there was some stereo separation!
  • John from Littleport, EnglandThe video for this song featured a pre-Red Dwarf Danny John-Jules (Cat), who dances with George near the end.....
  • Mary from Phoenix, AzOne of my favorite Wham! songs. God, I love George Michael!
