Songfacts®:

  • This song samples the actor Patrick McGoohan from The Prisoner. This offbeat TV series ran on British commercial television between 1967 and 1968, and spawned a number of phrases which entered popular culture, in particular: "You are Number Six"; "We want information" and "I am not a number, I am a free man!" McGoohan also provides the nexus to the song's title; he had previously played the lead role of John Drake in another TV series, Danger Man (which was known in the United States rather unalluringly as Secret Agent Man). >>>
