Songfacts®:

  • The first single from Django & Jimmie, a collaborative album between country superstars Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson, a portion of the song was previewed on the March 21, 2015 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live from SXSW. When the host asked Nelson what the song is about, he treated audience members to a few lines:

    It's all going to pot
Whether we like it or not
As far as I can tell
    The world's gone to hell
And we're sure gonna miss it a lot
All of the whiskey in Lynchburg, Tennesee
    Just couldn't hit the spot
    I've got $100 bill
You can keep them pills, friend
'Cause it's all going to pot
  • The album is named after Django Reinhardt, Nelson's favorite guitar player, and Jimmie Rodgers, who Haggard honored in 1969 by releasing a tribute album, Same Train, A Different Time.
  • Previous Haggard and Nelson collaborative albums include the chart-topping 1983 set Pancho & Lefty, 1987's Seashores of Old Mexico and a 2007 two disc record with Ray Price, Last of the Breed.
  • Merle Haggard told Esquire magazine in 2015 that he rarely smokes pot these days. "Well, you know, everybody falls off the wagon once in a while, and I've been quit for some time, but when you go down there around Willie, it's kinda hard to turn down everything," he said. "He's got his own brand; I think it's called Willie's Reserve. But, because of my lungs, I'm not able to do that much anymore. I'm 78 years old, and I had one lung lobe removed in '08, so I have a little problem with that."
