Songfacts®:

  • This was the first single released by the American singer-songwriter Willy Mason. Speaking to American Songwriter in a 2012 interview, he told the magazine that the song still touches people eight years after its release. "I've had teachers write me to tell me they play it to their classes," he said. "Or parents say they've played it to their newborn babies. It's a song about wanting to be a good person and help the world. It's nice that a lot of people relate to that kind of thing."
  • Operatic soprano Renée Fleming covered the song on her 2010 album Dark Hope.
