  • Within Temptation frontwoman Sharon den Adel grew up playing computer games on the Commodore 64 and never dreamt that the Internet and social media would become as big as they are today. However, she feels the downside of the growth of computer technology is our loss of privacy, which serves as inspiration for both this song and another Resist track "Raise Your Banner." The singer explained in an interview with Germany's Radio Bob! (transcribed by Babbermouth.net).

"Any time I go on the Internet, everybody's trackable and traceable through cookies - you give so much for free. People don't know what they're giving away. It's also difficult to get out of the system. How do you remove it? It's possible, but most people don't know how to. What we do for the album, when you go to our website, you have to accept cookies, but then we show you what we know when you do accept cookies. For instance, we know your postal address. When I go to Google maps, I can see where you live. I can see what your house looks like; I can even go there. That's crazy that everything is so accessible to everyone. That there's nothing to protect you."
  • The song features guest vocals by Papa Roach's Jacoby Shaddix. Den Adel explained to HMV.com that she had always been a fan of the singer but had never met until they were both on the bill at Grasspop. They started talking about art and found that they connected. When Within Temptation was looking for a male voice for Resist she thought of Shaddix. They sent him a couple of songs and he chose "The Reckoning."
