Songfacts®:

  • Topless at the Arco Arena is Wonderlick's second album. Lead vocalist Tim Quirk was the frontman for the band Too Much Joy before starting a career on the business end of the digital music world. When the album was released, Tim's day job was VP of Programming at Rhapsody. He told us: "'Devil Horns' was one of the first tracks we wrote for Topless. We began it in a very swanky hotel room in Portland, while touring on Wonderlick's debut, and finished it in a very crappy Travelodge in Seattle. Some friends/fans were trying to convince us to go drinking with them after that show. There may even have been women and drugs involved, but we were having too much fun writing this one; nothing could compete. It also sprang from that AC/DC concert (see "When She Took Off Her Shirt"): I remember they were selling red devil horns with AC/DC on them. You put them on your head and they lit up, so when the lights went down in the Arco Arena, suddenly there were thousands of horned creatures cheering, and, naturally, making the devil horns sign with their hands and shouting, 'Rock and roll!' Just like the topless lady, it was fun, but forced. The song tries to look beyond the rituals to the bliss they're meant to summon." (Learn more at wonderlick.com.)
