Point of fact is that the Tom Scholz stayed in Boston and the rest of the band went out to California to record in the studio. The recorded tracks - minus Scholz's guitar - were then sent to Scholz in Boston so he could add his guitar parts. As it turned out, Scholz re-recorded all of the instrumental parts - leaving Delp's vocals - and then sent his tapes back to California for mastering with the engineers in Los Angeles being none the wiser to the fact that he had done all the instrumentals himself. This is all well documented. He is, therefore, somewhat justified in believing that Boston IS Tom Scholz. I don't necessarily agree with him and think Scholz is a pompus a**, sort of like Sheldon from "The Big Bang Theory", but he is unarguably a brilliant engineer and exceptional instrumentalist.

Then, decades later, I was coincidentally traveling for work in the Boston area when the news of Brad Delp's senseless (to all but him) death came over the wire. I happened to have it on a disc and it was poignant to play it in my rental car on a cold but clear day, headed south to Connecticut. No less powerful today than it ever was. A sort of anthem for gain and loss, and the wonderment of women.

Boston BLEW Sabbath away, their show was clean and driving, as opposed to a drunken Ozzy almost falling off the stage. This song reminds me of my brother, he died 13 August 2009, we used to drive around and listen to the 8 track. I learned to play this song, and sang it with him the last time I saw him. It's funny how a song about nostalgia makes me nostalgic.

  One of the LA-area Indian casinos, Pechanga, uses parts of the song in their ads. Though I'm not a big fan of pop music in ads, I will admit that they did a good job of editing in a panoramic zoom shot of a golf drive during the "slipped away..." sustained note.

Though I have some bias cuz I was born & spent my early childhood in the Boston area, Boston is still one of my favorite bands, and of course this album was a masterpiece! In my opinion the Boston album ranks right up there with "Dark Side Of The Moon" as one of the greatest classic rock albums of all time. I doubt I'd get much argument with that either. This song was great as well as "Foreplay / Long Time", but perhaps my favorite by them was "Hitch A Ride". I just love the way that 2 minute guitar solo at the end of the song just jams on & on. One of my favorite feel-good guitar jams in all of music. I very much like "Don't Look Back" as well, and I remember waiting in anticipation for years for the long-awaited "Third Stage" album to come out. I feel fortunate to have seen them in concert 5 times now between 1987 & 2004 (87,95,97,03,04), especially in light of the recent Brad Delp tragedy this past March, 2007. What a shame. Don't know much about him but he always seemed like a nice guy to me, and what a great voice! Thank you for sharing your voice with us for the time you had.

  Just before I turned 13, I got my first 45 RPM single - this song. It was, is, will be one of my all time fvts. At that age, the words didn't mean much, I loved the music. As I got older, & lost loves, it became more than a tune. 1 of the very best songs ever written, by 1 of the very best bands ever.

For all the comparisons of this song with "Walk Away Renee" and "Smells like Teen Spirit", there's another song that has a very similar riff. Listen to the instrumental bridges between verses and long fade-out of both this song and "Tend my Garden" by the James Gang from 1970. I'm not implying plagiarism, but hearing one always reminds me of the other.

  Funny story, the subject of this song, the mysterious ex-lover "Mary Anne" is the mother of a good buddy of mine. She dated Tom Scholz and broke up with him before Boston went big. Thus, the song was written about her. She lives a quiet life in northeastern Massachusetts, but it must be pretty cool to have such a famous song written about you. This summer I went over to my friend's house and said "Hello, Mrs. _______" and she was like "no, please call me Mary Anne." It was pretty awesome haha.

I guess the music sounds somewhat similar to me - but that's probably the reason I like this song soooooooo much. I have so many good memories playing that game with my friends and this song revives those memories. Truly one of the greatest songs ever written!

Many would suggest that only the 1st two are worthy of praise, but I beg to differ. Grant it, the last three albums don't have maybe the same quality, and muscians have been interchanged, but I still enjoy them in a way that anyone does if it's their favorite band. I will never grow tired of listening to them or anticipating a new release. I see them whenever they come to town and rock out to a band that never has gotten the acclaim they deserve. I hope one day, they will be inducted to the "Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame", because without Boston, many other so called super groups of the 70's never would've made it. This is one of my all time favorite songs that takes me back to one of my 1st radio listening experinces. I wasn't much older then seven or eight and would desire to hear this song played as often as I could. As long as they continue to put out music, I will buy it and look for the next show.
• Dave from Marieta, GaBoston's entire first album (containing this hit song) was recorded in Tom Scholz's basement using a modified 12-track recorder (truly amazing considering the many vocal and guitar harmonies used on the recording). Scholz is not only an amazing guitar player but he's also an electronics and audio production genius. He has a master's degree in electronics from the acclaimed Massachusettes Institute of Technology (MIT) and co-designed much of the technology used for the Instamatic Land camera, while working for Polaroid in the years before forming his band, Boston. Tom was able to capture the Boston guitar "sound" by starting his own audio electronics company in the 80's, Scholz Research and Developement. SRD would become famous for making the "Rockman", a portatble Walkman-style guitar effects device in which a guitar player could plug-in and have the famous "Boston chorus/distortion sound" through headphones.

  I think that's self explanitary: It's about the writer escaping from the world by listening to songs that remind him times past but when he does, he remembers his lost love who left him.
