  • When you're down and troubled
And you need a helping hand
And nothing, nothing is going right
Close your eyes and think of me
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest night

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running, oh yeah baby, to see you again
    Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you've got to do is call
And I'll be there, ye, ye, ye
    You've got a friend

    If the sky above you
Should turn dark and full of clouds
And that old north wind should begin to blow
    Keep you head together
And call my name out loud now
Soon you'll hear me knocking at you door

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running, oh yes I will, to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall, ye
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there, ye, ye, yeah

Ain't it good to know that you've got a friend
When people can be so cold
They'll hurt you, and desert you
And take your soul if you let them, oh yeah, don't you let 'em now

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again, oh baby, don't you know
    Winter, spring, summer or fall
Hey now, all you have to do is call
And I'll be there, yes I will
    You've got a friend
    You've got a friend, yeah

Ain't it good to know you've got a friend
Ain't it good to know you've got a friend

Oh, ye yeah, you've got a friend Writer/s: Carole King

  • Carlos Pessoa from Bertioga, BrasilI really like this song, specially this version. Wish I could have a friend to call or even to be called when someone needed me. Sometimes I think, the more it gets old more hard is to find a new friend. The few I had, all are living far away from me. And I have only 25yo!
  • Naomi from EnglandWhat movie had "you've got a friend" in it? All I remember is the characters where a boy derek and a girl robyn in it.
  • Craig Barbian from WisconsinI'm a huge James Taylor fan and Carole King is certainly one of our greatest singer/songwriters.
  • Jennifur Sun from RamonaAlways thought James had wrote this. Love the lyrics and the friends this reminds me of.
  • Barry from Sauquoit, NyOn September 5th 1971, James Taylor injured his hand on a piece machinery at his home on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts; as a result his wound needed 12 stitches, thus his upcoming concerts at Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Hollywood Bowl were canceled...
The day before on September 4th his covered version "You're Got a Friend" was at #22 on Billboard's Hot Top 100, and that was also its last day on the chart...
Between 1970 and 1978 he had twenty-one Top 100 records; five made the Top 10, with the above song reaching #1, it peaked at the top spot for one week on July 25th, 1971...
On the day Mr. Taylor's version peak at #1, Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway's duet version was at #31 on the Top 100.
  • David from Plattsmouth, NeJames Taylor repeatedly calls this "the best song ever written" and credits Carole King's kindness in giving it to him to record as the reason for his initial popularity (as told at the Seattle Troubadours Tour in 2010).
  • Rick from Calgary, CanadaI think Annabelle is a little off in ascribing this as "Record of The Year" for 1971. It won the other two awards she noted but Carole King actually won "Record of The Year" honors for "It's Too Late"
