  • Girls, you know you'd better watch out
Some guys, some guys are only about
That thing (my men and my women)
That thing (don't forget about the deen)
    That thing (the Sirat al-Mustaqim)
    That thing (yo)
That thing (it's about a thing)
    That thing (uh, yo)
If ya feel real good wave your hands in the air (yo, what? What? What?)
And lick two shots in the atmosphere (uh, yeah, yeah)
(Uh, uh, uh, put 'em up, put 'em up) yeah, a-yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, a-yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah (yeah, yeah) (put 'em up)
Yeah, a-yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah (yeah, yeah)

It's been three weeks since you were looking for your friend
The one you let hit it and never called you again (uh)
'Member when he told you he was 'bout the Benjamins? (Uh-huh, yeah)
You act like you ain't hear him, then give him a little trim
To begin, how you think you're really gon' pretend (pretend)
Like you wasn't down and you called him again? (Again)
Plus, when (when) you give it up so easy you ain't even foolin' him (him)
If you did it then, then you'd probably- again (again)
Talking out your neck, sayin' you're a Christian
A Muslim, sleeping with the gin
Now that was the sin that did Jezebel in
Who you gon' tell when the repercussions spin?
Showing off your ass 'cause you're thinkin' it's a trend
Girlfriend, let me break it down for you again
You know I only say it 'cause I'm truly genuine
Don't be a hard rock when you really are a gem
Baby girl (girl), respect is just a minimum (minimum)
N- and you still defending 'em (defending 'em)
Now, Lauryn is only human (human)
Don't think I haven't been through the same predicament (I been in)
Let it sit inside your head like a million women in Philly, Penn
It's silly when girls sell their souls because it's in
Look at where you be in, hair weaves like Europeans
Fake nails done by Koreans come again

Yo, a-win, win, come again (yeah, yeah)
Uh, bredrin come again (yeah, yeah)
My friend come again (yeah, yeah)
    (Yeah, yeah, yeah, uh, yo)
    Yeah, yeah

Guys you know you'd better watch out (yeah, uh)
'Cause girls, some girls are only about (some guys, some guys are only)
That thing, that thing, that thing
That thing, that thing, that thing (one thing, one thing)
    (Yo, yo)

The second verse is dedicated to the men (men)
More concerned with his rims and his Timbs than his women
Him and his men come in the club like hooligans
Don't care who they offend, poppin' yang (like you got yen)
Let's stop pretend, the ones that pack pistols by they waist men
Cristal by the case men, still in they mother's basement
The pretty face men claiming that they did a bid men
Need to take care of they three or four kids (man)
And they facin' court case when the child support late
Money taking and heart breaking, now you wonder why women hate men
    And the sneaky, silent men
    The punk, domestic violence men
And quick to shoot the semen, stop acting like boys and be men (be men)
How you gon' win, when you ain't right within? (How you gonna win?)
How you gon' win, when you ain't right within? (Bredrin)
How you gon' win, when you ain't right within? (Be men)
Uh, uh, come again, uh (uh, uh)

    (Come again)
Yo, yo, come again (yeah, yeah)
Yo, bredrin come again (yeah, yeah)
And sistren come again (yeah, yeah)
    (Yeah) yeah, yeah

    Watch out, watch out
    Look out, look out
    Wa-watch out, watch out
    Look out, look out
    Watch out, watch out
    Look out, look out
    Wa-watch out, watch out
    Look out, look out

Girls you know you'd better watch out (uh, huh)
Some guys, some guys are only about
That thing, that thing, that thing
That thing, that thing, that thing
Guys you know you'd better watch out
'Cause girls, some girls are only about
That thing, that thing, that thing
That thing, that thing, that thing

Girls you know you'd better watch out (some guys, some guys are really not ready)
Some guys, some guys are only about (yeah, some girls, some girls are only, uh)
That thing, that thing, that thing (we taking it back, yo, way back, yo)

  • Rose from Baton RougeI've listened to this song multiple times and really understand the message she's sending. "It's been three weeks since you were looking for your friend
The one you let hit it and never called you again" I really felt this lyric to the heart.
  • Jim from Burnaby, B.c. CanadaThat's a hateful song which has nothing to do with love, as real doowop music did in the 1950s. Sorry but that song only makes me more hateful of Rap music. That's the music where F words can be said so long as you say them fast enough because no one can understand what you're saying anyhow. It may be an award winning song as a Rap song but it only helps to divide people into groups which like certain types of music and certain lifestyles. I'm a doowop songwriter who wants to unite people with my music, not divide.
  • Wanda Tijuana from Bronx NyIt's obvious that "that thing" is sex, more specifically, casual meaningless sex. In fairness, Ms. Hill begins the song with "ladies first", then second verse as she says "dedicated to the men". Both genders are guilty of going out of their way with foolish & arrogant attention seeking behaviors, for example women showing off their asses as she explains, or getting the weaves or fake nails, then the men who come up in the club acting like hooligans & not caring who they offend, Crystal by the case, etc. Moral of the story is we need to love ourselves first & have more self respect, if we want to be respected by others. Don't be so quick to give up your body for pleasure to someone you don't really know that well, or have feelings for, that's just a booty call. In this song, the woman gave it up too fast to a guy who she never heard from again. Men are also guilty of sleeping with women who don't really care about them either, and are just looking for a good time. Ladies & gentlemen, please take Lauryn's advice. You need to get that self love before expecting love elsewhere, and stop focusing on attention from others for approval. You don't need men (or women) to make you feel good about yourself. Don't give it up so freely & easily, or you may not end up hearing from him or her again. There's more to life than a good time, one night stand/meaningless sexual flings. Look for someone you can give your heart & soul to, not just your body. Someone that will call you again.
Don't be a hard rock when you really are a gem. How you gonna win when you ain't right within?
  • Sony from Bangalore, IndiaThis is a complete bad-ass track...love love it!
  • Bertrand from Paris, FranceAfter the far too early breakup of the Fugees, the music world waited impatiently for Lauryn Hill's first solo effort. The wait was worth it. [b]The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill[b] is one of the top albums of the decade and "Doo Wop (That Thing)" is a brilliantly tuneful dissection of sexual politics from the point of view of both genders.

  • Jai from Bridgeport, CtUm Its Remeber back on the Bully, like Bulevard, like Street. Doo Wop Singers used to stand on the corner and harmonize songs together.
  • Victoria from Compton, Ca"It's been 3 weeks since you've been looking for your friend. The one you let hit and never called you again".... This opening sentence explains it all.
  • Sum Sum from New Delhiexcelllent...too good a song..so many of you must be wandering to truly understand the beginning of the lyrics...i managed to understand some in bits and parts. here it is, i think i m correct coz i listened to it intently more than thousand times.. i m sure it ll be a help for those who ve been looking for the lyrical part......

Yo, Remember back on da Boogie when Cats used to Harmonize like: woooooowhooohooo (check out the situation) My men and my women dont forget about the Dean The Sarat-al-Mustakeem, Yo its about a thing, If you feel real good Throw your hands in the air! (MUSIC STARTS) Admit two shots in the atmosphere! Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah

Then the song start....its been three years...
