  • For once in my life, I have someone who needs me
    Someone I've needed so long
For once, unafraid, I can go where life leads me
Somehow I know I'll be strong

For once I can touch what my heart used to dream of
    Long before I knew
    Oh, someone warm like you
Would make my dream come true

Yeah, yeah, yeah (for once in my life)

For once in my life, I won't let sorrow hurt me
Not like it's hurt me before (not like it's hurt before)
For once, I have something I know won't desert me
I'm not alone anymore (I'm not alone anymore)

For once, I can say, this is mine, you can't take it
Long as I know I have love, I can make it
For once in my life, I have someone who needs me

    (Someone who needs me)
    Ayy, ha-ha, ayy, yeah
    (Someone who needs me)
    Oh, baby, oh, baby

    (For once in my life)

    (Make your dreams come true)
For once in my life, I won't let sorrow hurt me (for once in my life)
Not like it's hurt me before (not like it's hurt before)
For once, I have something I know won't desert me
I'm not alone anymore (I'm not alone anymore)

For once, I can say, this is mine, you can't take it
Long as I know I have love, I can make it
For once in my life, I have someone who need me (someone who needs me, yeah)

Whoa, for once in my life
    (Someone who needs me, yeah)
    Yeah, somebody that needs me
    (Someone who needs me, yeah)
    Ooh, baby

  • Distant Relative from Portland Oregon Max from Chicago is correct about the song being about the birth of a child, I think his first daughter. I don't remember the details, but that was at least the story that was told among family. I'm very distantly related to Ron through marriage.

  • Steve from Whittier, CaI'm listening to it right now on my Windows MediaPlayer. Great Song!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Max from Chicago, IlI don't have anything to back me up other than a feeling, but my suspicion is that the lyrics were inspired by the birth of child, not so much by the discovery of a romantic love.

  • Oliver from New York Cirty, OrTo clarify something. Jean DuShon's was the first released version of the song. It is possible that Barbara McNair recorded the song first (hers was very slow and heavy-laden with syrpy strings), but was not released until months after DuShon's was out. It seems that Miller thought more could be done with the song and sought Jean's help. After working on the interpretation for an entire day (with DuShon's input) Miller was so pleased he gave her permission to record it. Other singers may have sung the song first, but DuShon, after changes had been made, had the first release.
  • Oliver from New York Cirty, OrThis I got directly from Jean DuShon and other information I've gathered on the Net.

Barbara McNair signed with Motown in 1965 and recorded a few tunes (but not "For Once in My Life"). Jean DuShon was appearingin a club in Detroit and old friend, Ron Miller, came to see her. He told her about a song he was having problems with and needed her help. She visited him and his wife at their home, spent an entire day working on the song resulting in Miller being very pleased. He asked her to record it. DuShon went into the studio, recorded the song and Chess Records brought out the single in March, 1966. In November, 1966, Barbara's album, HERE I AM was released and "For Once" was included on the lp. Barbara released the single of the song in 1967 and it was a b-side to another 45 of hers in 1969.
