  • Ma belle amie
You were a child of the sun
And the sky and the deep blue sea
    Ma belle amie
    Après tous les beaux jours
    Je te dis merci merci
You were the answer of all my questions
    Before were through
I want to tell you that I adore you
    And always do
That you amaze me by leaving me now
    And start a-new
Ma belle amie I'm in love with you

    Let the bells ring
    Let the birds sing
Lets all give my substitute a big cheer
    Let the bells ring
    Let the birds sing
For the man after him waits here
For the man after him waits here

    Ma belle amie
You were a child of the sun
And the sky and the deep blue sea
    Ma belle amie
There was a time that you thought
That your only friend was me
You were the answer of all my questions
    Before were through
I want to tell you that I adore you
    And always do
That you amaze me by leaving me now
    And start a-new
Ma belle amie I'm in love with you

    Let the bells ring
    Let the birds sing
Lets all give my substitute a big cheer
    Let the bells ring
    Let the birds sing
For the man after him waits here
For the man after him waits here Writer/s: H. VAN EYCK, P. TETTEROO

  • Rltmusicman from New OrleansIt isn't my beautiful female friend. The Amie means simplt friend
  • Greg Kirnie from ColoradoUnfortunately,I used to hear this song all the time on AFVN. The only reason it didn't become my least favourite song for that time is that Tom Jones came out with "What's new pussycat"
  • Harry W Bruckert from From Neenah, WisconsinMa belle A mie brings back bitter sweet memories. In 1970 as a young man living in south western Wisconsin I fell in love with a beautiful woman. Ask for a date, she told me that she was not interested. Before the disappointment and a short time thereafter Ma belle A mie was popular. The words in the song was as if i wanted to say to her the words in the song that was in, Ma belle A mie.
  • Leslie Kim Bock from Eden Prairie Minnesota This came on on the oldies channel the other day and it brought me right back to when I was young I loved this song.
  • Dave Radford from FlaBrings some great memories I was living in Tenn at the time my senior yr in high school when i hear it brings back those simple fun times puts a smile on my face.
  • John Henry from Reston VaHate this song!! For no reason, it got into my brain and is stuck there. It's especially aggravating because the lyrics make no sense and have grammar mistakes.
  • Jenni Henderson from Sth Australia Absolutely loved this song growing up. Brings back great memories
  • Joe from Barberton OhWhen I was 11-12 this was my favorite song to roller skate to.
  • Chris Montoya from AlbuquerqueWhat a great song. I was born in 1970 and my Mom and Dad use to play music all the time. I forgot about it and finally found it.
  • Seventhmist from 7th HeavenThe French name and lyrics always bring "Lady Marmalade" to mind when I hear it.
  • Barb from UsaWhat is known about Peter Tetteroo. Did he leave wife and children behind? Where else was he involved other than music?
  • Jason from Henderson NvI think this song is about childhood friends. He never got the nerve to ask her to marry him. He will wish her luck for he new love but if it doesn't work out then he is going to ask her to marry him.
  • Aiken Nutz from Tahlequah OkThis was a big hit on AFVN Radio in Vietnam when I was stationed in Bien Hoa (30 mi. north of Saigon) in early 1970. My days in 'Nam were getting short when this hit it big. I still love it whenever I hear it on the radio. I can still hear the lead singer's gruff voice and that odd organ. For the longest time, I couldn't understand some of the lyrics, until I got into the 1980s. Like "lets give my substitute a big cheer." Anyhow, it's a special song for me because most of the GI's that served with me in 'Nam are now deceased. Good memories of good buddies.
  • Paul Bellamy from Fort Washington, MdSo I lost my dad on November 5th of this year (2015). The other day my stepmom and I were discussing our last name and she mentioned this song. I looked it up on YouTube and completely fell in love with it. I think it captures my dad's memory perfectly, especially as I study the lyric. Indeed, after all the beautiful days, I tell you, thank you, thank you. Although I've only known this song a week, it already holds a special place in my heart.
  • Hugh from RaleighA great song. I just wish I hadn't heard it in Home Depot the other day (Sept. 2015) because my constant belting out of "My Belle Amie I'm in love with you" around the house is driving the family crazy. That's the sign of a wonderful melody and the message is good too.
  • Babbling Babette from Tulsa OkWonderful melody on this hit song. In '94 my oldest brother gave me some of his 45 rpm singles from The Sixties & this was one of them. I fell in love with it. I never heard it until I owned the single, since I wasn't born when it was a hit in 1970. Then in about 2013 I was inside a Walmart store & heard it playing on their music P.A. system or the Walmart music channel. Whatever. It's special to me because of my oldest brother Lance (who gave me that 45 single). It was his favorite song the year (1970) he got out of Vietnam War from his Army service. He told me he had a terrible time in Vietnam & this simple love song gave him hope of surviving & coming home. Lance died in 2010 of a heart attack. So it is still special to me.
  • Rita from CaliforniaI was a young child when this song was popular and I always loved it. Now that I am older it sounds to me like this song is about either a father or a step-dad (or maybe even a uncle or Grandpa) talking to the daughter (or niece-whomever) at her wedding. Telling her thank you for all the beautiful days they had together, but that now he is excited for her to start a new life with her new love, but that he will always be there waiting if she needs him. The singer is the man after her new #1.
  • Barry from Sauquoit, NyOn March 8th 1970, "Ma Belle Amie" by the Tee Set peaked at #5 (for 1 week) on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; it had entered the chart on January 18th at position #83 and spent 12 weeks on the Top 100 (and for 3 of those 12 weeks it was on the Top 10)...
The group had one other record make the Top 100, "If You Do Believe In Love", it stayed on the chart for 4 weeks, peaking at #81...
Sadly, lead singer Peter Tetteroo passed away on September 9th, 2002 at the young age of 55 (liver cancer)...
    May he R.I.P.
  • Eddie from Drogheda, IrelandI have it on a CD 'Baby Boomer classics'...with 'Venus' by Shocking Blue and others. The 'B' side of the Major Minor single is the same as my 'Hansa' german single which is the same version as on various CD versions!
  • Eddie from Drogheda, IrelandI have the UK release of 'Ma Belle Amie' on MAJOR/MINOR Records and it is a different take of the recording. it plays slower and runs for almost four minutes!
  • Camille from Toronto, OhThis is just an adorable song. Just enough French in there to make the ladies fall in love with the sound of this guy's voice. He definitely sounds much older, in a good way, than he looks in the video...nothing wrong with that baby face, tho! That raspy sound when he declares, "I'm in LOVE with you!!" is very appealing, and the words, "Ma Belle Amie"are perfectly poetic and flow from the lips, soft and sweet.
  • Jeff from Sterling Heights, MiMark Lancaster PA, I'm looking at the B side of the Ma Belle Amie 45 record and the song is Angels Coming In The Holy Night.
    Jeff Montecillo MI.
  • Edward from Henderson, NvAs near as I can piece it together: his girlfriend left him, but he's happy (let the bells ring/let the birds sing) that she's with a new man (let's give my substitute a big cheer) because he still thinks she'll leave the new man and come back to him (for the man after him waits here).
  • Garry from Sydney, AustraliaJust sitting having lunch with two of my kids who work with me and we heard Ma Belle Amie on the radio. They love the song and they are only 20 and 22 years old. I am 59. They enjoy all the oldies just as well as they enjoy all the latest music of their era. 1969 was my first year out of school and it has good memories. We like this site when we have a question on oldies but goodies.
  • Charles Hollingswort from Leeds, AlTo Mark in Lancaster,PA.;The "B" side was "Angels Coming In The Holy Night." No kidding!!!
  • Roland from Marshfield, WiThis song can be found on Super Hits of the 70s Have A Nice Day Vol. 2
  • Mark from Los Angeles , CaAccording to a number of websites, Peter died of liver cancer -- at the age of 55. Gone too soon.
  • Mark from Lancaster, Pai was only 10 years old when ifirst herd this song but i allways rememberd listenind to it it is a great song the b side was allso good but i cant remember the name of it if anybody remembers let me know thanks
  • Adam from Los Angeles, CaBob,TX--------to my knowledge, it is NOT Paul McCartney singing harmony on that. yet i do agree with you....it Does sound a bit like him.
  • Judy Carpenter from Ft. Wayne, InLove that song - wish I could get a cd somewhere! Any clues as to were I can find one?
  • Steve from Flossmoor, IlLike most people, I was just a kid when this song came out, and I thought it had something to do with golf! (Because of the band's name, of course--nothing in the lyrics to suggest it). But impressions are formed early on, and to this day, I can't play or watch golf without thinking of this song. This band should have had more hits in the states.
  • Bob from Kingwood, TxIn this song's chorus, when Peter Tetteroo sings, "For the man after him waits here", is that Paul McCartney backing him up? It sure sounds like him.
  • Marz from Kalamazoo, MiActually Tony, Peter Tetteroo wrote the lyrics to a lot of the Tee Set's songs so they weren't learned phonetically. He wrote the lyrics to this song. I've seen a few performances posted on you tube and most are sung in English. I'm not sure if he spoke English so I'm going to assume he did. Of course you know what happens when you assume..... Gosh, he was a hottie!!
  • Beth from Pittsburgh, Pai remember this song..from when i was in high school..Mr meridith was our home room teacher, and also the french teacher..so we asked him..what does it mean?...ma belle amie...my beautiful friend.
  • Michael from Montreal, que., CanadaI first heard this song from a movie...just can't remember what movie it was...lol. This song brings back many memories for me which is probably why I like it so much. Won't win any awards but it is "catchy". First song I ever heard with foreign words in it(french). Not too foreign to me anymore...being from Montreal.
  • Tony from Vero Beach, FlThere were a few hits by Dutch bands around this time, and I remember hearing that - like the early ABBA tunes later on - the singers did not actually speak English and that the songs were simply learned phonetically. Not sure if it's true (maybe someone can verify), but it sounds likely...
  • Bevaart from Pijnacker, NetherlandsThe Singer of Tee Set, Peter Tetteroo, died on 9-9-2002.
In 1968 he made a Top Ten Hit version of Neil Diamond's "Red Red Wine", which was a in 1983 a nr.1-hit in Holland by UB 40 (Dutch Charts).
"Ma Belle Amie" was a nr.1-hit in Italy (1970).
  • Patrick from Wevelgem, BelgiumIn 1970 the band released the single "She likes weeds". It became a number one hit in the Netherlands.
It wasn't released in the U.S. due to the obvious connection with drugs.
  • Howard from St. Louis Park, MnWhen I was younger, I always thought the lyric Ma Belle Amie was "My brother and me." This was one of the first 70s songs to contain foreign lyrics.
  • Pete from Nowra, Australiaalways remember the film clip...set along one of the canals in Amsterdam
