  • Just a day, just an, ordinary day
    Just tryin' to get by
Just a boy, just an, ordinary boy but
He was looking to the sky and
As he asked if I would come along
I started to realize that everyday he finds just what he's lookin' for
And like a shooting star he shines, and he said

Take my hand, live while you can,
Don't you see your dreams lie right in the palm of your hand

And as he spoke, he spoke, ordinary words
    Though they did not feel
For I felt what I had not felt before
And you'd swear those words could heal and
As I looked up into those eyes, his vision borrows mine
And I know he's no stranger
For I feel I've held him for all of time, and he said

    (chorus)

Please come with me, see what I see
Touch the stars for time will not flee
Time will not flee, can't you see

Just a dream, just an, ordinary dream
    As I wake in bed
And that boy, that ordinary boy
Was it all in my head?
Didn't he ask if I would come along
It all seemed so real, but as I looked to the door
I saw that boy standing there with a deal, and he said

    (chorus)

Just a day, just an ordinary day
    Just tryin' to get by
Just a boy, just an ordinary boy, but
He was looking to the sky Writer/s: VANESSA CARLTON

  • Ed from CanadaIn the music video it has Oct 14, there will be an eclipse on Oct 14, 2023. Also, in the video people start disappearing the same day. Rapture.
  • Anna from London, United KingdomIt sounds like it has to do with Peter Pan or Neverland...
  • Rocio from Canberra , Australia(Lawrence, Jersey City, NJ) I agree with the God reference... and everytime I listen to the song, it makes more sense. but like you said, it could just be the way you approach the song. But when she sings about waking up thinking was it a dream, then she sees the boy. he makes her a deal.. makes sense in the Christian way :) I LOVE THIS SONG!!!
  • Theresa from Murfreesboro, TnI feel like this song was written just for me. Awesome ballad.
  • Brooke from Cincinnati , Ohas i sit here and listen to the song for the billionth time, i think its about a girl finding a guy she loves, hes just an ordinary guy to everyone but as "as he asked if i would come along, i started to realize, taht every day he finds just waht he's looking for, like a shooting star he shines" that just like normal poeple he finds what he needs in every day but because shes so facinated by him, she thinks because he finds everything he's looking for he shines like a shooting star. theres many references to this like in the line "and as he spoke ordinary words no they did not feel, for i felt what i had not felt before adn youd swear those words could heal, and as i looked up into those eyes, his vision borrows mine and i know hes no stranger, for i feel ive held him for all of time" As she's first speaking to this guy like she normally does with guy, she feels something different that shes never felt before, and how hes speaking she feels could heal anything and everything. His vision borrows hers' meaning there eyes are locked and that even though she just met him, she feels like theyve known eachother a life time. He seems too good to be true, that he was just a dream, but he's there when she wakes up and she realizes that he's real, and he takes her to new levels of herself by making her really live her life.

over all Vanessa Carlton's songs are very deep in the aspect of lyrics, no one really quite knows exactly what they mean besides Vanessa herself
  • Cj from Corl, Hong KongThis song fits perfectly with the story of Peter Pan...if you've read the book or seen the films you can see the similarities...Ordinary boy, looking to the sky, take my hand, live while you can etc.....There's no two ways about itxD
  • Lydia from Elyria, Ohto me all of her songs seem so pure and beutiful. this one in perticular is so sweet. it 2 me is about her draming of the perfect guy, and then she finds him.
  • Amelia from South Portland, Mei think its about just days you have in life but then you meet someone. And you fall in love.
  • Mari from California, Caevery time i hear this song it takes me back to when i first enlisted in to the army. this song was the last one i heard before we got all of our civilian taken away for like three weeks. and all those hard times i thought of giving up and thought things were too hard to continue i could hear this song playing in my head and the entire time i never knew who sang it until i came back home.
  • Lawrence from Jersey City, NjI think this song may have some sort of God refference. If you listen to the way she describe the boy, she describes him as being an ordinary boy, who offer her salvation by asking her "to come along" as he "looked to the sky" (heaven). Also, how he used ordinary words to preach to his ontemporaries. the way she describes this boy reminds me so much of the way you hear evengelist describing God as Jesus on Sunday morning. Of course, this could just be some sort way i look at things cuz of 12 years of Catholic School. But one thing is certain, i would love to be the boy who takes her away...
  • Kara from Moro, IlI love this song. It really makes you think about what it would be like to just leave with the love of your life and forget everything and just try to fulfill your dreams.
  • Mike from Winnipeg, CanadaI have never heard this song in my life. I was hoping they got the artist mixed up but then I checked the lyrics. I have heard Ordinary Day preformed by Great Big Sea. It is a band from teh Atlantic in Canada. I still have that song stuck in my head

    "And I say
Way Hey Hey it's just an ordinary day and it's all your state of mind. At the end of the day. You just have to say it's alright"
