Songfacts®:

  • 2 Chainz opens Based On A T.R.U. Story with this high-powered introductory track, which also features Lil Wayne. Weezy's relationship with the Atlanta rapper goes back to the days when he was one half of the duo Playaz Circle and was known as the MC Tity Boi. Wayne joined in on Playaz Circle's biggest hit, "Duffle Bag Boy," which peaked at #15 on the Hot 100 in 2007 and 2 Chainz also linked up with Weezy for his 2011 performance on MTV2's Unplugged.
  • Wayne joked to MTV News that he wasn't happy with his contribution. "I'm very upset about that just to let everybody know: He put me on that, I sound wack as hell on there," he said laughing. "He did not tell me that was gonna be the first song on his album."

"We were just in the studio and, man, I just did that," continued Weezy. "I was in there just messing around and I come back and hear it's [the] #1 [track] on his [album]. Please don't judge me from that — my bar game is way higher than that, man."
  • Chainz explained the album title to MTV News: "T.R.U. is an acronym for The Real University. It was something that I felt like Hip-Hop was missing for a while. I been working on this album my whole life because it's my debut album as 2 Chainz. I kinda wanted it to be like 'to be continued' or 'part 2' of where I left off with my mixtape [T.R.U. REALigion], which I thought was a great piece of work."
