Songfacts®:

  • This is the opening track of British singer-songwriter Anna Calvi's second album, One Breath. She explained to NME: "It's about a depression that you don't really know how to overcome, but you know that you don't want to feel it any more, so you just walk away from it. Is it autobiographical? Yes. This record is more about things that are going on in my life."
  • Much of One Breath was inspired by the depression that dogged Calvi throughout its recording. "I don't think I have any control over my emotions," she told NME of her turmoil. "It's a problem in my life, but in my music it's great. I think the feeling of not being on stable ground is what makes art interesting."

In a later interview with The Independent, Calvi stated that her emotional ups and downs do not signify an album about depression. "It's much more about the feeling of hope that things will get better," she explained, "that there's limitless potential to every moment because the future isn't already written."
