Songfacts®:

  • "Maybe You're The Problem" finds Ava Max addressing a worthless romantic partner. A short-tempered, egotistic person who always blamed the singer and never themselves, Ava's friends had warned her off her lover. Once she'd worked on herself, Ava recognized her other half was the problem in their toxic relationship, not her.
  • Ava Max wrote "Maybe You're The Problem" with her regular producer Cirkut, Sean Douglas (Demi Lovato's "Sorry Not Sorry," "Thomas Rhett's "Die a Happy Man") and Jonas Jeberg (Jordin Sparks' "One Step at a Time," Panic! At The Disco's "High Hopes").

When they got together for the session one October 2021 morning, Ava was seething about the subject of the song. She stepped into the booth and once the singer heard Cirkut and Jeberg's beat, she started venting melodies and lyrics about her partner.

After Ava had finished, her team played it back and expressed their excitement. However, the "Sweet But Psycho" hitmaker was more hesitant. "What are you talking about?" she recalled saying to Audacy's Bru. "I was just screaming 'maybe you're the problem' into the microphone." But by the time they'd finished the track, Ava shared their enthusiasm.
  • So does this person know she's singing about them? Yes, Ava told Bru, they've heard it "and they kinda understood."
  • After dropping a snippet of "Maybe You're The Problem" on TikTok on March 21, 2022, Ava officially released the boisterous rock-influenced song as the lead single from her second album on April 28, 2022.
