Harry's Song

Songfacts®:

  • Mark Knopfler wrote a tribute to a departed loved one named Harry. So did John Lees, but while Knopfler's pal was an artist, the Oldham axeman's friend was a parrot! Just as Knopfler used "In The Gallery" to take a swipe at modern art, so it is evident from the tone of his voice more than from the lyrics that Lees is using the death of his (feathered) friend to rail at something, or someone else. It would be impertinent to ask or speculate further, but this angry song stands on its merits, and is just the sort of off-beat number one would expect from one of Britain's most original time-serving progressive rock bands. >>>
