Songfacts®:

  • Bring Me The Horizon frontman Oli Sykes has a history of addiction; so all-consuming was his dependence, he was willing to "die for" it. During lockdown, Sykes finally faced up to his destructive habits and kicked them out of his life.
  • "DiE4u" finds Sykes recognizing he's not someone who can drink alcohol or smoke weed in moderation. The vocalist told NME he sees the song accepting his addictions. "I just have a problem with it and it always goes down the same road," he said. "That's not something that I've been able to admit to myself.

"This song is a defiant stamp of me saying, 'No, I'm making a choice now. I can't keep doing this for the rest of my life because it's only going to end up one way.'"
  • During the song, Sykes reflects on his addiction from the perspective of an affair. "You're doing this thing behind everyone's back, it's a secret and it feels like you're cheating and betraying people. I never saw it in that way," he said. "I just thought I was harming myself and not other people. I didn't realize how much it can f--k up people's trust."
  • While the song's principal theme sees Sykes choosing to better himself, this enabled a parallel meaning relating to environmental issues. Said the BMTH frontman: "It also connects to a deeper theme about us as a society and how we need to look at the way we treat ourselves, each other, as well as the world."
  • Sykes wrote the song with BMTH keyboardist Jordan Fish during the COVID lockdown. Sykes stayed with his Brazilian wife Alissa Salls in Brazil for the whole pandemic, so he penned and recorded the track remotely.
  • Bring Me The Horizon played the song live for the first time on September 20, 2021, when they kicked off their UK tour at the Bonus Arena in Hull. Because it was the band's first concert since lockdown, they also gave the live premiere to several Post Human: Survival Horror tracks, including "Parasite Eve," "Obey" and "Teardrops."
  • This came in #1 in the 2021 Kerrang! Readers' Poll for Song of the Year. The "DiE4u" visual also got voted Video of the Year and Bring Me The Horizon were chosen Live Band and Band of the Year.
