Songfacts®:

  • "Kool-Aid" is a high-octane track packed with Bring Me The Horizon's signature blend of metalcore and electronic influences. Singer Oli Sykes' lyrics incorporate dark, abstract imagery that dissect the toxic grip of a cult/manipulator, where blind faith curdles into chaos.
  • The phrase "drinking the Kool-Aid" has become synonymous with blind devotion to a harmful and distorted belief system. It's a chilling image linked to the Jonestown tragedy.

Cause you got a taste now
Drank the Kool-Aid by the jug
    So suffer your fate, oh

In 1978, American congressman Leo Ryan visited the "Reverend" Jim Jones' religious community, Jonestown, in Guyana to investigate alleged human rights abuses. His mission ended in horror when Jones had Ryan and his party killed. The aftermath became even more devastating when Jones coerced over 900 of his followers to perform ritual suicide by drinking a deadly cocktail of cyanide and tranquilizers, which was mixed into a tub of flavored grape drink similar to Kool-Aid. This catastrophic event serves as a stark reminder of the human capacity for both immense loyalty and tragic misplacement of trust.
  • Bring Me The Horizon released "Kool-Aid" as a single on January 5, 2024. It is the band's first new song since announcing the departure of Jordan Fish. Their keyboard player, Fish joined the band in 2012 and was a major influence on Bring Me The Horizon's sonic evolution, steering them from their metalcore roots towards a blend of rock and electronic textures.
  • Sykes and his Bring Me The Horizon bandmates Lee Malia and Matt Nicholls wrote "Kool-Aid" alongside Daisuke Ehara, Zakk Cervini and Daniel Lancaster.

Japanese composer Daisuke "DAIDAI" Ehara also contributed to the writing of Bring Me The Horizon's single "Darkside."

Rock producer Zakk Cervini's other collaborations with Bring Me The Horizon include "Lost," "Darkside" and their joint track with Sigrid, "Bad Life."

Dan Lancaster mixed Bring Me The Horizon's 2015 album That's The Spirit, as well as songs on 2019's Amo and 2020's Post Human: Survival Horror.
  • Bring Me The Horizon gave "Kool-Aid" its live debut when they kicked off their 2024 UK and Ireland tour at Cardiff's Motorpoint Arena on January 9, 2024.
