Songfacts®:

  • This song was originally recorded by the American singer Wilbert Harrison in 1962. Eight years later, Harrison had a hit with a modified version, "Let's Work Together," which was covered by Canned Heat. Bryan Ferry recorded his own version of the original song for the title track of his 1976 album. Released as a single, the dance-floor filler became his biggest solo hit in the UK.
  • The video features Ferry's then girlfriend, Jerry Hall. The Texan supermodel did not heed the song's message of keeping the relationship going as she left Ferry for Mick Jagger a year later.
  • In 1988 Ferry did an updated version of the song, re-mixed by Bruce Lampcov & Rhett Davies. This re-recording reached #12 in the UK chart.
  • Although "Let's Stick Together" was Ferry's biggest solo hit in the UK, reaching #4 on the charts, he seems almost indifferent to his own version. "Wilbert Harrison's 'Let's Stick Together' is just a brilliant record," he told Uncut magazine. "Mine is... OK."

He described the cover as more of an experiment than a grand statement: "It's more a case of, you think, 'Oh well, I'll have a go and see if this goes anywhere.' I never analyze it much. You choose songs you have a feeling for. And sometimes, I guess, I was just looking for a change - to get away from my own writing."
