Songfacts®:

  • Though the title does not appear in the lyrics, Chris Brown is clearly "under the influence" of Robitussin cough syrup. It's made him too lazy to go out, so he entreats his lover to ride over to his place and get intimate together.
  • "Under The Influence" was one of 10 new tracks Chris Brown recorded for the extended version of his 2019 album Indigo. The expanded addition of what was already a double album contains a mammoth 42 songs.
  • Chris Brown tapped Nigerian producer Kiddominant to create the chilled production. "Under the Influence" marked Kiddominant's second credit on Indigo (Extended), following the Davido-assisted "Lower Body." Kiddominant's resumé also includes Orezi's 2013 hit single "Rihanna" and Davido's 2017 tune "Fall," the first Afrobeat song certified Gold in the United States.
  • "Under the Influence" went viral three years after its release after choreographer Nicole Kirkland and her dancers made a video with sensual choreography. Brown also makes a cameo in the clip.

Following the renewed interest in the song, Brown's label, RCA, officially sent it for play on US rhythmic radio stations on September 20, 2022.
  • When "Under The Influence" reached #36 on the Hot 100 dated September 24, 2022, Brown became the first R&B singer to achieve over 50 Top 40 hits on the chart.
