Songfacts®:

  • The fourth single from Christina Aguilera's debut album, this song became her third #1 hit, following "Genie in a Bottle" and "What a Girl Wants." It's a party song where she invites a guy to the festivities, hoping to get to know him a little better.
  • This was written by the Swedish team of Paul Rein and Johan Aberg. Rein was a recording artist in his home country, which gave him some insight on how to craft the vocal melody and lyrics around Aberg's beats. They wrote the song as "All I Want Is You" with a gaudy, uptempo beat hoping to pitch it to the Spice Girls. The song found its way to RCA Records, which was looking for material for Aguilera's first album, and they took it.
  • The single and album versions of this song are completely different beasts. For the single, seven more writers made contributions and were added to the credits, bringing the total to nine. By this time, the album had taken off so there was a lot of scrutiny over the single. Three of the writers were from the team known as Celebrity Status: Chaka Blackmon, Raymond Cham and Eric Dawkins. Shelly Peiken and Guy Roche, who wrote "What a Girl Wants," were two more, and RCA A&R man Ron Fair took a credit along with Aguilera.
  • The original idea for the single was to make it a medley with the disco hit "Got To Be Real," but the record company couldn't clear the rights. Instead, they added a long instrumental break and a bit of "What a Girl Wants" after the bridge to fill in that section.
  • The music video is a big-budget production, befitting Aguilera's popularity at the time and the importance of MTV. Directed by Paul Hunter, it features her boyfriend at the time, Jorge Santos, as one of the dancers.
