Songfacts®:

  • Ciara's first single release since marrying Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson in July 2016, this empowering anthem finds the songstress giving thanks for the blessings of finding true love.

My lessons, made blessings, I turned that into money
Thank God I never settled, this view is so much better
I'm chilling, I'm winning, like on another level
  • The song title is a direct reference to Ciara's tweet from January 2018 in which she told her fellow females to "level up" when it comes to marriage. She faced some serious backlash as some felt the singer blamed women. Ciara later posted a follow-up the message, explaining that she wanted to empower women as she felt at her "lowest moment" as a single mom to baby Future Zahir Wilburn, before learning to love herself.
  • Ciara wrote the song with Theron Thomas of Rock City, whose resumé also features hit songs recorded by the likes of Miley Cyrus ("We Can't Stop"), Rihanna ("Pour It Up") and Nicki Minaj ("Only").
  • The uptempo production is courtesy of J.R. Rotem, who has been responsible for #1 songs recorded by Rihanna ("S.O.S. (Rescue Me)"), Sean Kingston ("Beautiful Girls" and Jason DeRulo "Whatcha Say").

"Get Ready To Dance," Ciara tweeted just before the song's release.
  • "Level Up" samples the Jersey remix of Fun's 2011 hit song "We Are Young."
  • The music video, directed and choreographed by Parri$ Goebel, features the New Zealand dancers of ReQuest Dance Crew.
  • The song's official remix, features Missy Elliott and Fatman Scoop, who previously all worked together on Elliott's hit single "Lose Control." The connection between Ciara and Missy Elliott also yielded the Top 5 song "1, 2 Step" but the two stars hadn't collaborated since 2009's "Work." Missy alludes to the surprising nature of them getting back together when she raps on the bridge:

Me and Ciara, they ain't seen this comin'
  • "Level Up" has helped Ciara clarify her own purpose as an artist. "My mission is to inject love and inspire and make the world dance, and this song allowed me to do exactly that," she told Billboard. "I hope I can inspire people to level up and be their best selves and do that by taking them on a journey with me."
