Songfacts®:

  • Over a wobbling upright bass, finger-picked guitars, and a breathless Wurlitzer, Clairo lays bare the struggle of an unfulfilling relationship.

But I'd rather be alone than a stranger
You'd come visit me late at night
I'd rather wake up alone than be reminded
Of how it was a dream this time

The person Clairo is seeing refuses to love her the way she deserves and only visits her for booty calls. She has to make a decision between being someone to this person, even if she's not treated well, or living a life of loneliness. Should she chuck it all in, sell her stuff, and become a wandering nomad?

Clairo doesn't give us any easy answers. "Nomad" is a song about the messy reality of heartbreak, the push and pull between wanting love and protecting yourself from getting hurt again.
  • Clairo premiered "Nomad" during the first Sling Tour show in The Fillmore, Charlotte, North Carolina, on February 16, 2022.
  • "Nomad" is the opening track on Clairo's third album, Charm. She recorded the album at two New York studios: Allaire Studios in the mountains outside of Woodstock and at Diamond Mine Recording in Queens.
  • Clairo co-produced Charm with Leon Michels, who played saxophone in Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings and has worked with Norah Jones and The Black Keys.

The recording process was strictly analog, recording to tape, featuring a variety of instruments ranging from horns to vintage synthesizers.
  • Clairo wrote "Nomad" with two of Michels' Dap-Kings band mates, drummer Homer Steinweiss and bassist Nick Movshon.
