Songfacts®:

  • This heartfelt piano ballad finds Chris Martin singing of how us humans all share the same feelings and face similar struggles in everyday life.

    'Cause everyone hurts
    Everyone cries
Everyone sees the color in each other's eyes
    Everyone loves
Everybody gets their hearts ripped out

The first two lines are an interpolation of R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts."
  • Martin also talks about how because we're all part of the same big family we need to see each other as brothers, not enemies.

How in the world I am going to see?
    You as my brother
    ...Not my enemy?

The Everyday Life track "Arabesque" has a similar message of the need for unity between people of different beliefs.
  • The song ends on a celebratory note, as Martin encourages us when we wake up each morning to embrace life.

    At first light
Throw my arms out open wide
    Hallelujah
  • "Everyday Life" is both the title track and closing song of Coldplay's eighth studio album. The tune summarizes the general message running through the set.

"It's all about just being human," Martin told BBC Radio 1's Annie Mac about the record. "Every day is great and every day is terrible…It just feels kind of free. There's so much life bursting out on the planet."

"(The album) is our reaction to the perceived negativity that's everywhere," he added. "And there is a lot of trouble, but there's also so much positivity and so much great life happening. So in a way, it's just trying to make sense of things, saying what we feel and what we see."
  • Coldplay gave viewers a debut performance of the ballad during their appearance on the November 2, 2019 episode of Saturday Night Live.
  • The song's music video was directed by Karena Evans, who is responsible for several of Drake's visuals, including "God's Plan" and "In My Feelings." It sees Coldplay performing on a beach at sunset while footage of people comprising every creed and color are spliced into the clip. The video was filmed in multiple locations across the world, from South Africa and Morocco to the Ukraine.
