Songfacts®:

  • This was released as the B-side of Coldplay's "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall" single. The song was inspired by Cormac McCarthy's book The Road. Martin described the cut to Billboard magazine as, "a sort of villainous, dark piece," adding "It's the idea of two people running away from a Kafka environment, or an Orwellian thing."
  • Cormac McCarthy is an American novelist and playwright whose stories span the Southern Gothic, Western, and modernist genres. Amongst his best known works are his 2005 novel No Country For Old Men whose film adaptation won an Academy Award for Best Picture, and 2006's The Road, which received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Here are four more songs inspired by Cormac McCarthy:
    "Breathe" by U2.
"Pray For Rain" by Massive Attack.
"As He Climbed The Dark Mountain" by Thursday.
    "The Road" by Hurts.
